Ronaldinho to gain Spanish citizenship

MADRID, Spain: Ronaldinho will reportedly receive Spanish citizenship next Monday, making him eligible to appear for FC Barcelona as a European Union player.

The 27-year-old Brazil forward will swear allegiance to the Spanish Constitution in Barcelona, Catalan sports daily Mundo Deportivo said Thursday.

In addition, Barcelona's teenage Mexican forward Giovani Dos Santos is expected to gain Spanish citizenship next Tuesday or Wednesday.

That would leave Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o and Ivory Coast's Yaya Toure as Barcelona's non-EU players. Spanish clubs are allowed three non-EU players.

Ronaldinho, who won FIFA's world player of the year award in 2004 and '05, has helped Barcelona win the Champions League and two Spanish league titles since joining from Paris Saint-Germain in 2003.

Barcelona, which finished second behind Real Madrid last season, opens its league campaign against Racing Santander on Sunday.
