Daily Video : Julio Baptista Scores A Wonder Goal In A Pre Season Tournament For Real Madrid

Brazil chief supports Ronaldo

Brazil FA president Ricardo Teixeira has backed Ronaldo in his bid to get back into the Brazil side.

The CBF president was quoted last week in the newspaper Estado de Sao Paulo as being critical of the Selecao and in particular Ronaldo, making comments about the AC Milan striker's weight.

Teixeira told the newspaper: "How much is Ronaldo currently weighing? How much will he weigh in 2010? We need to find a new Ronaldo."

But since then 30-year-old Ronaldo, who has not played for Brazil since the World Cup, has reiterated his desire to return to the international stage and Teixeira has now given his backing to the striker's quest.

"I include myself with the Brazilians that support the striker to achieve his objective to return to the national team," he said.

"I'm convinced that (Brazil coach Dunga) is attentive and following the performance of every Brazilian player."

Adriano Thanks San Paolo Fans

Inter's Brazilian striker Adriano thanked the fans at the San Paolo stadium for cheering him on during the friendly against Juventus at the Trofeo Birra Moretti on Wednesday.

The friendly match against Juventus at the Trofeo Birra Moretti on Wednesday gave Adriano new hope and the conviction he can get past the negative period he has been going through the last year and a half.

"The cheers I got during the game at San Paolo gave me a boost," the striker revealed, "because it shows I played well and that the work I'm doing is starting to have its effects. But I'm waiting for the cheers and the applause of San Siro. I want the fans to applaud me like that after a great performance in Milan. I hope it happens soon."

"Mancini will decide who plays. These choices are up to him and all I can do is make it hard for him to make a decision by working hard." It seems he has acknowledged that Ibrahimovic will once again be guaranteed a starting place and that the competition with Suazo will be very tough as the Honduran has shown great things in this pre-season.

"When I'm happy," Adriano concluded, "I play like this, but I know very well this is only the start. I have to keep it up throughout the season and be ready to face any difficulties that will inevitably come around."

Palermo Move For Young Flamengo Star

According to reports in Brazil, Flamengo may be about to seal a deal with the Italian islanders that will take one of the new young guns out of Rio de Janeiro and across to Serie A…

Brazilian agency Gazeta Press broke the news that ex-goalie-turned-agent Gilmar Rinaldi has flown to Palermo, charged with arranging the transfer of star number 10 Renato Augusto.

Palermo are rumoured to be offering up to 15 million Euros, but a hopeful Flamengo are looking for up to double to release the young gun. Rinaldi has already spoken with the player’s rep Carlos Leite.

The main obstacle – despite Flamengo’s somewhat elevated pretensions – is that the player lacks that modern transfer lubricant: a European passport, although the club is confident that an agreement can be reached.

The last star young Flamengo star to hit Italy was Inter Milan number 10 Adriano, and if hands are shaken with the Rosaneri the Rubro-negro man will join fellow Brazilians Amauri and Simplicio at Palermo.

Chelsea relieved as Alex pens deal

Brazilian defender Alex has completed his protracted move to Chelsea.

Alex, who represented Brazil at this summer's Copa America, told Chelsea TV: "I hope to start very soon and to do a good job at this wonderful club.

"I am happy for the opportunity Chelsea have given me. It's a wonderful club, I sometimes watch the games and I hear about the club and I hope everything goes well.

"I hope to adapt myself very quickly because Carvalho and (manager Jose) Mourinho will help me with the language barrier, and I hope I can start straight away and won't have any problem to be on the team."

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon feels the club now have genuine strength in depth at the back, having had to resort to playing Michael Essien and Paulo Ferreira in central defence because of injuries last season.

"It seems like a long time coming. We had it agreed a long time ago," he said.

"As you can see he has kept fit over the summer and he is a good addition to the squad. He has got to be our biggest player (in terms of height) and he could be quite intimidating.

"Last season we lost out I think, there was that crucial period where we had those injuries around there. I think we've definitely strengthened in that position. We're very well covered and with very good quality as well."

Barcelona president: Ronaldinho will not be sold

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has assured fans that Ronaldinho is not on his way to AC Milan.

Reacting to reports of renewed interest from AC Milan in the Brazilian, Laporta said from Hong Kong: "Ronaldinho is not for sale.

"He is very happy in Barcelona and we are very proud to have the best player in the world in our team."

Seleção Calls Up Young Guns For Japan

Coach Rogério Lourenço has released the list of Under-18 players that will head out to compete in the Sendai tournament in Japan. AC Milan man Alexandre Pato is just one of the Brazilians who have competed in the Cup over recent years…

The players will be gathered at familiar training base Granja Comary in Teresópolis near Rio de Janeiro on Friday to begin preparations for the north-eastern Japanese tournament that kicks off at the end of the current month.

Brazil has won the Sendai Cup in three out of four showings so far (2003, 2005 and 2006). The young Brazilian guns will face local club Tohoku, then the French and Japanese national sides in a quadrangular system, the winner being decided on a points system.

Under-18 Seleção Call Up List

Goalkeepers: Renan (Botafogo) and Rafael (Palmeiras)

Wing-backs: Gerônimo (Atlético-PR), Everton (Corinthians) and Cássio (Guarani)

Defenders: Sidnei (Internacional), Raphael (Flamengo) and Leandro (Coritiba)

Midfielders: Diego (Santos), Peca (Flamengo), Rafael Souza (Grêmio), Mayaro (Fluminense), Rodriguinho ( Botafogo), Sérgio (São Paulo) and Tarta (Fluminense)

Strikers: Luís Gustavo (Figueirense), Renan (Atlético-MG) and Dentinho (Corinthians)

Adriano Eyes First-Team Return

Internazionale striker Adriano has expressed his determination to force his way into Roberto Mancini's plans for the new season.

The Brazilian struggled to hold down a regular place in the Inter starting XI last season and received harsh criticism from national team coach Dunga concerning his laid-back attitude.

But after looking sharp during pre-season and regaining his fitness, the 25-year-old wants to make an impression on Serie A in the forthcoming campaign.

"I'm still not at my best but I'm happy," he told the club's official website, www.inter.it.

"There's still a long way to go, I must want to win a place in this team. It won't be easy because there are many good team-mates, but my whole career has been uphill.

"I have never been scared of difficulties. I'm working and smiling - this is what counts for me and Inter."

Brazilian Battle In Portugal: Liédson Versus Helton

Sporting Clube striker Liédson has a man in his sights for the upcoming Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira (Cândido de Oliveira SuperCup) on Saturday: none other than a fellow Brazilian: FC Porto keeper Helton…

The clássico that will pit Cup winners Sporting Clube against League winners FC Porto in Leiria at the weekend will se a new face-off as the Sporting striker tries to beat his own personal bogeyman between the FC Porto sticks.

The Ninja has never scored a goal against the sometime Seleção keeper, even while the goalie was starting to stand out in Portugal at minnows União de Leiria and Liédson was already a feared goal machine in the Terrinha.

The Leão number 31 is one of the top Bwin Liga scorers of recent years, approaching fellow countryman Mario Jardel in terms of ability to shovel the goals in, and only has Naval goalie Taborda and the Dragão to beat in the entire league.

Now it’s the very same stage that Helton began to shine on, the Dr. Magalhães Pessoa stadium, where the latest chapter of the fierce rivalry will be played out.

Zelao denies Panathinaikos bid

Corinthians defender Zelao has denied that he is set for a move to Greek side Panathinaikos.

The 20-year-old centre back was reported to have been the subject of a 2.5 million dollar bid but insisted that he is to stay at the Brazilian club.

"Of course that the dream of every player is to have the chance to be transferred to Europe," he said. "But I want to do my bit for Corinthians and then I will think about other things.

"I haven't been told anything about receiving any concrete offer for my transfer. Maybe it's all just rumours."

Zaragoza are also reported to be interested in signing the player as a long-term replacement for Gabriel Milito, who joined Barcelona this summer.

"The last thing that I heard is that the club had two proposals to buy me and I am flattered that big European teams are interested in me."

Zelao, born Luiz Ricardo da Silva, only joined Corinthians this year from Bragantino.

Roberto Carlos denies Boca reports

Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos has said he was surprised by reports that he would join Argentinian club Boca Juniors as nobody contacted him before he signed for Fenerbahce - although Boca claim otherwise.

He added that having signed for the Turkish outfit he will not change his mind and move to South America.

"Nobody called me from Boca Juniors," he said. "I was very surprised when I was told that I was going to play at Boca Juniors. I have just signed a contract with Fenerbahce.

"I never close any door, but I have a contract in Turkey."

Carlos added that one day perhaps he would be happy to play in the country, although he is already 34 and his game is based for a large part upon speed.

"I would like some day to have the chance to play in Argentinian football," he continued. "I am not going to say that it's my dream to play in Argentina because that wouldn't be the truth, but I always watch a lot of Argentinian football.

"If in the future there is a chance to play there I would like it. Boca is a team known all over the world. Any player would like to play there.

"However at the moment I am under contract at Fenerbahce so there isn't any chance of me moving."

Boca vice-president Pedro Pompilio has insisted that they entered negotiations for World Cup winner Carlos.

"At one point, when we knew that Roberto Carlos was leaving Real Madrid, we had some negotiations to bring him to Boca - but he finally decided to sign at Fenerbahce."

Real Madrid's Emerson to take wage-cut for AC Milan move

AC Milan have held talks with Real Madrid midfielder Emerson this week.

Corriere dello Sport says Milan have moved ahead of city rivals Inter in the race to land the want-away Brazilian.

Emerson is willing to take a pay-cut on his £3.75 million Madrid salary to secure a return to Italy before the start of the season.

Sao Paulo beats Botafogo 2-0 to extend lead atop Brazilian league

SAO PAULO, Brazil: Defender Alex Silva and striker Leandro scored second half goals as Brazilian league leader Sao Paulo beat its closest rival Botafogo 2-0 Wednesday to extend its winning streak to six games.

Defending champion Sao Paulo has 37 points from 18 matches, five more than second-place Botafogo, which has a game in hand. The league will reach its halfway point after next weekend's matches.

"The championship is still wide-open," Sao Paulo goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni said. "We still have several competitive teams in contention."

Alex Silva put Sao Paulo ahead in the 63rd minute with a header from the six-yard line after a corner.

Six minutes later, Botafogo was reduced to 10 men when midfielder Tulio was red carded for kicking Leandro in the face as the striker went to the ground after competing for the ball.

Leandro then sealed the win in the 74th minute when his low right-foot shot from outside the area capped a counter attack in front of more than 47,000 fans at the Maracana.

Sao Paulo's Ecuadorean defender Neicer Reasco broke his left tibia in a clash with Botafogo's Luciano Almeida in the first half.

Reasco, who was sidelined for several months in 2006 because of fracture in the same bone, is expected to miss the rest of the season, Sao Paulo doctors told local media.

Botafogo, winless in two matches, could have regained first place with a win. The Rio de Janeiro club had led the competition since the sixth round before being surpassed by Sao Paulo following a scoreless draw against Parana last weekend.

Cruzeiro moved to third place after beating Sport 2-0 with two goals by former Sporting Lisbon striker Alecsandro at the Mineirao in Belo Horizonte. It was Cruzeiro's third win in a row.

Goias, fourth in the standings, defeated Atletico Mineiro 3-2 at Serra Dourada stadium in Goiania with two goals by veteran midfielder Paulo Baier.

In Recife, Nautico routed Figueirense 4-2 with a pair of goals by Uruguayan midfielder Alberto Martin Acosta.

Flamengo, Brazil's most popular club, lost 2-0 to Atletico Paranaense in Curitiba. The five-time national champion has won only one of its last 12 matches and is second-to-last in the standings with 12 points from 14 matches.

Also Wednesday, Fluminense — winless in five matches — drew Juventude 0-0 in Caxias do Sul.

Four matches will be played Thursday: Vasco vs. Corinthians, Gremio vs. America, Palmeiras vs. Internacional and Santos vs. Parana.

Unsettled Alves desperate for Chelsea switch

Dani Alves demands that Sevilla let him take advantage of interest from London giants Chelsea as the Brazilian right-back faces a big-money transfer...

Sevilla's in-demand defender Dani Alves has issued a come-and-get-me plea to Chelsea - and expects that his current club won't stand in his way.

The highly-rated Brazilian right-back said of a possible Chelsea transfer, "I want to take advatange of it. And out of respect for me, Sevilla must let me do it.

"I have behaved well in my four years here and now I expect the same courtesy from Sevilla, and that they consider an offer.

The player went on to say that he is determined "to play for a great team and take advantage of what's happening," but that he doesn't want to "leave Sevilla on bad terms."

Alves joined Sevilla from Bahia in 2002. The 24 year old received his first Brazilian cap in 2006, and also signed his current Sevilla deal in December of that year, tying him to the Andalucian club until 2012.

Brazilian Top Scorer Set To Stay

Top scoring Brazilian striker Josiel is slated to remain at current club Paraná Clube as the transfer window gets ready to slam shut at the end of the month. The Brazilian management hasn’t been sufficiently impressed by offers so far and prefer to wait for a suitably succulent offer…

Durval Lara Ribeiro has confirmed that he expects to keep 27 year-old Josiel, top scorer so far in the Brasileirão (Brazilian First Division), at the southern Brazilian club as the rumours of Russian offers have so far failed to materialise into anything concrete.

“We haven’t yet seen any official document containing a proposal from any buying club. We want him to focus on playing here for now until we have a proposal to study and pass on to the player as well”, explained the exec.

Josiel da Rocha has now gone five games without scoring, some saying that the lure of a move to Europe has resulted in his mind prematurely wandering from Brazil. The grapevine has said that a $2 million offer may be forthcoming, but the club wants at least double.

Dynamo Kiev and Olympique Marseille have both been linked with a move to sign the player although neither club has confirmed making an offer. With the Brasileirão 2007 ending in December, Josiel should remain in Brazil until the European winter transfer window opens.

Juan keen to see Real Madrid's Cicinho at Roma

Juan says he'd be happy to see Roma sign Real Madrid fullback Cicinho.

The pair play together for Brazil and Juan smiled: "I know Cicinho from the national side and he would be a great addition.

"But I have no idea what stage discussions are at between the two clubs."

Atletico Madrid to send Diego Costa to Moscow

Atletico Madrid will send new signing Diego Costa away to Russia for the new season.

The Brazilian teenager is unlikely to make a first team impact at Atletico this season and they're now in talks with both CSKA Moscow and Spartak about taking him on-loan.

Dunga welcomes back Kaka & Ronaldinho

Brazil coach Dunga insists the decision by Kaka and Ronaldinho to miss last month's Copa America will not affect their international future.

Barcelona's Ronaldinho and AC Milan's Kaka have been included in Dunga's 22-man squad to play Algeria in Montpellier on August 22, but were excused from duty for the Copa America following long domestic seasons in Europe.

Ronaldinho featured as Barcelona finished second behind Real Madrid in the Spanish La Liga, while Kaka played an instrumental role as AC Milan finished fourth in Serie A and won the Champions League.

"They missed the opportunity to win the Copa America, but I don't bare them any grudge," said Dunga.

"They are eligible players in this team. There are no personal problems. We just do the best for the national team."

Brazil landed an eighth Copa America title after beating Argentina 3-0 and Dunga insists the duo will not guaranteed an instant return to the side.

"We have no starters or replacements on paper," he added. "Each player has to book his place, each player has to conquer it."

Palermo told £17M for Flamengo's Renato

Flamengo have slapped a £17 million price-tag on their star attacking midfielder Renato Augusto.

Palermo sports director Rino Foschi made an approach to Flamengo last weekend for the Brazil U20 international and was informed of the valuation by the club's president, Marcio Baroukel de Souza Braga.

Torino chief Antonelli: We like Kerlon

Torino sports director Stefano Antonelli admits they're interested in Cruzeiro attacking midfielder Kerlon.

The Brazilian youngster was linked with the Granata in yesterday's press and Antonelli said: "I confirm that Kerlon is a good player and someone that interests us for the future. But not for today."

Several Spanish Liga clubs are also keen on Kerlon, however Torino could have the inside-running as the midfielder's European agent is the Italian, Mino Raiola.

Newcastle Sign Cacapa

Newcastle United have completed the signing of former Lyon captain, Claudio Cacapa, on a free transfer on an initial two-year contract.

The 31-year-old Brazilian centre-half put pen to paper late on on Friday, with his deal including an option for a third season at St James' Park.

Cacapa, who had won five French league titles in a row with Lyon, told his new club's official website: "I've been in Newcastle since last Sunday and I've realised just how big a club it is and I hope I will be as happy here as I was in Lyon.

"I've spoken with Sam Allardyce since I've been here and I've been very impressed and I want to play for him. It's a massive club with big potential and I want to be part of that.

"I want a new challenge in a new country and the Premier League is a very competitive league.

"I've got a lot to prove, but I want to show everyone that I'm good enough to play for Newcastle United and I'm confident I can do that."

Four Four Two Magazine: One-On-One Interview With Ronaldo

One-on-One with Ronaldo

Does he get on with Mourinho? Will he be joining Becks in the States? And has he considered getting his teeth fixed? Your questions answered by Ronaldo...
Walking into Milanello, AC Milan’s plush training ground, you could be mistaken for thinking that you’re entering a top-class golf club. Set in the midst of a forest, with lush green, perfectly-manicured grass around each and every corner and without another building in sight, it’s easy to forget why you’re here. What jolts you back to reality is the small crowd of supporters gathered outside the main gates, waiting patiently for an autograph.

Today, Ronaldo is late. In truth, that’s not unusual. You never know what time he will arrive. Sometimes he doesn’t arrive at all. Yesterday he picked up a minor injury at the end of the training session and we were forced to postpone our interview for 24 hours. So, as we sit in the sunshine, FourFourTwo crosses its fingers tightly and says a little prayer.

Since his return to Italy from Spain, this is the first time Ronaldo has agreed to speak to the foreign press. Although he would probably deny it, he knows that whoever you are, you have to prove yourself time and time again. Even if you are one the greatest players ever to have played the game. Even if your nickname is The Phenomenon and you have three FIFA World Player of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2002) collecting dust on your mantelpiece. Words are two a penny, however. The only place Ronaldo needs to do the talking is on the pitch.

In January, after four and half years at the Bernabeu, Ronaldo asked Real Madrid for a transfer, agreeing to a drop in salary, because he was desperate to play football and score goals, something he does better than anything else in life – and better than almost anyone on the planet. It doesn’t matter for which team – Cruzeiro, PSV Eindhoven, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid or AC Milan – Ronaldo is Ronaldo, never belonging to this club or that. For some, he is a no-team footballer, son of the modern game’s star system. For others, he is a futuristic forward who scores the kind of goals others can only dream of.

When he finally appears, it’s late afternoon and the sun is edging towards the tops of the trees. Dressed in a pale pink T-shirt, oversize denim rapper pants, white trainers and sporting a new, sleek haircut, he looks younger than you might expect and certainly fitter than most fans would imagine. And he’s in good spirits – even if he does start grumbling immediately about being “tired” and “in a rush and already late” for his next appointment. Nevertheless, he plays the media game and in truth, he’s anything but a prima donna. Polite, easygoing, bordering on friendly – rare for a top, top footballer – he goes along with all the photographer’s requests. And after 20 minutes he sits down on a huge white sofa, ready to answer your questions.

Who were your heroes when you were a kid? Who was the greatest: Pelé or Maradona? And is it true that Brazilians rate Garrincha above Pelé?
Dean Brown, Yeovil
When I was a child, my hero was Zico who was a big star for Flamengo and Brazil. My father was a Flamengo supporter so I began watching them and Zico was my favourite player – he very skilful and scored lots and lots of goals. On the rivalry between Maradona and Pelé, let me remind you that I’m Brazilian – that should give you your answer. And as for Garrincha, he was one of the best ever Brazilian footballers, but I never had the chance to see him play. Many people have told me many good things about him, though, and all Brazilians still love him.

At the start of your career you changed your name from Ronaldinho to Ronaldo then a few years later a certain goofy young Brazilian did the opposite. Why all the confusing name changing?
Hannah Moore, Liverpool
Actually, I’ve never changed my name. It has always been the same. My family name is Ronaldo, so when I was younger I was called Ronaldinho, which means “little Ronaldo”. But when I got older, it just became Ronaldo.

Who could do more “keepie-uppies”: you or your ex-wife Milene Domingues?
Phil Remington, Cambridge
No comment!

What was Jose Mourinho like as an interpreter at Barcelona? Would you say he was a special one?
Tom Cleavin, Ealing
I had a good professional relationship with him. At that time he was a nice man. Today I can’t claim to know him very well and people change during their life, but I know that at least he used to be a nice person.

How close were you to Bobby Robson? Did he really try to lure you to Newcastle?
Jonathan Hill, Newcastle
Robson is a really nice gentleman and I had a great time with him in Spain. He helped me a lot when I moved there; helping me to settle down when I was still very young. When I was at Barcelona, my first time in La Liga, I think I played the best football of my whole career. But moving to Newcastle? From what I know, he never tried to take me to Newcastle.

What’s the closest you’ve ever come to moving to the Premiership?
Jim Cox, via email
The truth is I’ve never had a real chance to move to England. Maybe it’s a pity that I never played in Premiership. Perhaps I would have liked it. But I must say, I’m more than happy with the career I’ve had. I’ve played for several years in Italy and Spain, two of the best leagues in the world, and I’m completely satisfied with that.

What really happened on the eve of the 1998 World Cup Final?
Jason Swanson, via email
Honestly, I would prefer not to talk about that again. Too many people have already spoken too much about it.

I’m going on holiday with my mates to Rio. What’s the best way to impress Brazilian ladies?
Robert Francome, via email
Don’t worry, Robert. The Brazilian ladies will show you everything as soon as you get over there!

OK, you do well with ladies, but have you ever considered getting your teeth fixed?
Ben Gallagher, Sutton
[Laughs] No.

Who’s the best coach you’ve worked with?
Grace Whale, via email
There are several I like but if I have to say only one name I would go for [Brazil’s 1970 World Cup-winning coach] Mario Zagallo, who was the coach of the Seleçao in 1998. A great coach and a great man.

If you could become not famous for one day what would you do?
Peter, via email
It’s not an issue. Every day I do whatever I want anyway. I don’t care if people look at me because I’m famous, my life is pretty ordinary and I do everything I want to do.

In your experience, who was a bigger party animal, Edmundo or Romario? Or is there anybody even more crazy?Gary Sharples, Bedfordshire
Look, I don’t like to judge people. Who am I to judge others? Every person is different so I would never call anyone “crazy”, not in a serious way and not in a funny way either.

Who’s the greatest defender you have ever faced?
Carl, via email
Paolo Maldini is the best I’ve played against. I’m glad he’s on my team now!

That haircut for the 2002 World Cup Final. Any regrets?
Damian Hall, Honduras
No, no, I still like it. It was my idea and I’m proud of that. At the time I was looking for something totally new, something distinctive, and I think I achieved my aim [smiles].

Which Brazil team is the best you’ve played in?
Keith Anderson, Kings Lynn
At the 2002 World Cup, we had a great team, the best I ever played in. Rivaldo, Ronaldinho, Roberto Carlos, Cafu, me… It was a team where we could find a goal in every minute in every way, and win every game. That’s why we won all seven games and that’s why we were world champions even though at the beginning of the tournament people doubted us.

Were you too hasty to leave Inter Milan for Real Madrid after they paid for your rehab for two years prior to the 2002 World Cup?
Stuart Staves, via email
Not at all. People should remember I never asked to leave. I was forced to leave. Inter sold me to Real Madrid. That was their choice. That’s why I have no problem playing for Milan now – there’s no reason for me to feel bad. I have no regrets.

Steve McManaman says that when you play golf, you employ a number of questionable tactics to ensure you win: distracting other players, moving your ball to a better position, etc. Is this really acceptable behaviour for a sporting legend?
Bernie, via email
[Laughs] It’s true that I like talking when I play golf. To me, it’s normal to enjoy and relax while playing golf, but I also know the rules and when I have to stay in silence. That said, it’s not true [laughs] that I make tricks to win.

Did you know that your hat-trick for Real Madrid against Man United in the 2002 Champions League inspired Roman Abramovich to buy into football? Does that make you feel guilty?
Eddie, Leicester
That’s a very malicious question. To tell the truth, I didn’t know that story about Abramovich but I can say it’s good for Chelsea to have such a rich owner. I can’t feel guilty about scoring a hat-trick at Old Trafford. It was a great night for me.

David Beckham says he’s swum in your pool. How close were you two really?
James Frith, via email
We are really good friends, and we’re still in touch. The reason is that although I can’t speak English very well, I could make myself understood so when David moved to Madrid I tried to help him. We spent lot of time together, not only the two of us, but also our families and children. For me he was, alongside the Brazilians in the squad, my best team-mate.

Having taken a bit of flak yourself, did you offer any advice to Ronaldinho after he was criticised for being overweight?
Michael Charles, via email
I don’t think he needs any advice from me or others. He knows what’s best for him.

In your opinion, which nation has the best-looking women? And what do you think of British women?
Graham Smith, via email
[Thinks for long time] I have to say that first are the Brazilians. [Another long pause as he thinks again] Second the Swedes. [Long pause] And third the Colombians. British girls? I don’t know what to say because I don’t go to England very often even though I like London very much.

Apart from your home, what’s the most expensive item you’ve ever bought?
Trevor Pearson, Belfast
I don’t care so much about money. I don’t spend much, I’m not stuck with material goods. Sometimes I buy a clock but after a week I’ve forgotten about it. So I can’t really answer because I’m not interested in luxury. It’s not what’s important.

What’s your favourite career goal?
Fiona Kerr, Aberdeen
I can’t pick just one, it has to be two. And my choice is simple: the two goals I scored during the World Cup Final in 2002. Not only because they were two good goals but especially for the value they had. It’s not every day you win the World Cup.

At your peak, where do you rate yourself among the world’s best ever strikers?
Jim James, via email
I don’t like to judge myself, I prefer to let others do that. I’m not a journalist but a footballer.

Have you made up with Pelé since you called him a “two-bob opportunist”
last year? Why have you two had such a turbulent relationship?

John Ryland, Wilmslow
We are not friends, we don’t know each other very well, but on the other hand, you can’t say that we are enemies. I respect him and his history and I think he could say the same about me. So, really there’s no
problem with Pelé.

You broke the World Cup finals scoring record in Germany, but how much was that achievement tainted by the fact that you were booed by some Brazil fans and Brazil failed to retain the trophy?
Tom, Oxford
My biggest memory of the last World Cup is that we lost against France too early. We were all really sad about that defeat because we believed we were able to do well; to win the World Cup again. All the rest doesn’t bother me at all.

What was your relationship with Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello like? Was he the reason you left Madrid?Gwynne Dixon, Surrey
I don’t have any relationship with him, it’s as simple as that. He was not the reason why I moved. I left Madrid because I wasn’t playing regularly and I wanted to. I know that at the end of the day it’s up to Capello to take decisions but I never had particular problems with him for the simple reason that we never had any relationship.

Why did you decide to wear the number 99 shirt for Milan? Are you a big fan of the 99 ice cream (the one with the flake stuck in it)?
Ravi Beeharry, London
It’s a funny joke but I’m afraid it’s not true. When I moved to Milan, the number 9 shirt was already on Filippo Inzaghi’s back so I couldn’t have that. So instead, I decided to go for the double 9. Nothing to do with ice creams.

Is there anything you haven’t achieved in your career that you wish you had?William Murphy, Whitney
Yes, I’d love to win the Champions League. I hope I can one day.

Having played for Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and now Milan, which set of fans have you had the most flak from? Can you rank them?
Andrew Johnston, Birmingham
I don’t want to rank the teams individually, but I will say that the Italian fans are the best because they support their team for the entire 90 minutes. In Spain, people go to the Bernabeu or Nou Camp in the same way that they go to the theatre or to the cinema: for them football is a show, they want to be entertained. I don’t think they ever support in the same way that the Italians do.

How do you see your future in the Brazil team. Do you think you have another World Cup in you?
Matt B, via email
I really don’t know. But neither do I know if the coach [Carlo Ancelotti] is playing me next weekend. I don’t want to think about the national team for the moment, I want to give everything to AC Milan. For my future there is plenty of time to think about it. I’m only 30 years old.

After Milan, would you be tempted to join Beckham in the US?
Neil Waterman, Shropshire
I live day by day. For now I’m 100 percent focused on AC Milan and that’s enough. Never say never in football but for the moment playing in the USA is not on my agenda.

What do you plan to do once you retire?
Clive Stevens, via email
I’m looking forward to chilling out, to relaxing, enjoying the life and not having any more commitments or deadlines. I love to think that when I retire I won’t have any clock in my life any longer. That will make me happy.

Brazilian defender Betao reaches deal to move to Sochaux

SAO PAULO, Brazil: Brazilian defender Betao has reached a deal to move from four-time Brazilian champion Corinthians to French club Sochaux.

Betao, whose full name is Eberto Willian Amancio, traveled to France on Monday to sign a four-year contract with Sochaux, which finished seventh in the French first division last season.

Transfer details were not immediately released, but local media said Corinthians will receive €1.2 million (US$1.6 million) to release the player.

Betao's contract with Corinthians was due to end later this year.

The 23-year-old defender began playing in the team's youth squads and gradually moved up to the senior Corinthians team, where he was made captain.

Corinthians has been struggling in the Brazilian league and is only 15th in the 20-team standings.

Gremio releases Brazilian striker Amoroso

SAO PAULO, Brazil: Two-time Copa Libertadores champion Gremio released veteran striker Amoroso on Monday.

The former AC Milan forward had a contract until the end of 2008, but Gremio said it did not intend to use him anymore.

The 33-year-old Amoroso moved to Gremio from Corinthians three months ago to help the club in the Copa Libertadores. Amoroso sustained a muscle injury shortly after arriving, however, and played sparingly as Gremio was lost to Boca Juniors in the final of Latin American club championship.

He started only once in the Copa Libertadores, and played a total of only 11 matches with Gremio.

Amoroso was signed by Milan in 2006 after helping Sao Paulo win the Copa Libertadores and FIFA's Club World Cup in 2005.

Gremio, the Copa Libertadores winner in 1983 and 1995, is eighth in the 20-team Brazilian league standings with 25 points from 17 matches. Its next match is Thursday against America at Olimpico stadium in Porto Alegre.

Brazilian coach accused of telling players to kick rivals

Flamengo coach Joel Santana is facing disciplinary action after a pitchside microphone caught him apparently telling his players to kick the opposition during Sunday's 3-0 defeat by Santos.

"If they start clowning around, you have give them a good kick," he was heard to say late in the match in an incident widely shown on Brazilian television on Monday.

Santana, who was starting his fourth stint as coach of the troubled club, appeared angry at the way Santos passed the ball around at the end of the game.

A spokesman for Brazilian football's disciplinary tribunal said Santana would face a charge of publicly inciting his players to break the rules.

Santana said on Monday that his words had been misconstrued.

"I'm surprised by the repercussion of one word that I said," he said in a television interview.

"It was a football expression which slipped out. What I wanted to say was for my team to go in hard, I wasn't asking anyone to use violence.

"There was no aggression. I'm not going to order my players to kick anyone and it was the case that nobody got booked."

Brazil to play Mexico in Foxborough

The Brazilians are coming. The Brazil men's national team will meet Mexico at 8 p.m. Sept. 12 at Gillette Stadium, the Seleção's first-ever appearance in the Boston area. The game is expected to be officially announced today.

The matchup was finalized in recent days and symbolically commemorated as the presidents of Brazil (Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva) and Mexico (Felipe Calderón) met in Mexico City yesterday. Justino Compeán, president of the Federacion Mexicana de Futbol, presented Brazil's president with a Mexico national team shirt with the No. 10 and his name inscribed.

"After our team, the Brazil team is the favorite among Mexicans," Calderón said.

Mexico won the most recent matchup, 2-0, in the first round of Copa America in Venezuela. But Brazil rallied to win the tournament, topping Argentina, 3-0, in the final July 15.

Kaká (Milan) and Ronaldinho (Barcelona) declined callups for Copa America but Brazil coach Dunga is expected to announce today that they will be on the roster for a friendly against Algeria in Montpellier, France, Aug. 22. Other candidates for the team include Ronaldo (Milan).

Dunga, who captained Brazil when it won the 1994 World Cup in the US, replaced Carlos Alberto Parreira as coach after the '06 World Cup. Ricardo Teixeira, president of the Confederação de Futebol Brasileira, recently criticized the conduct of the World Cup team, noted that Ronaldo was overweight in Germany, and said he named Dunga as coach to restore discipline and order in the squad.

Mexico tied the US, 2-2, in a World Cup qualifier before 57,407 spectators at Foxboro Stadium April 20, 1997. The Mexican team, which will play host to the US at Estadio Azteca Sept. 9, is promoted in the US by Soccer United Marketing, which is affiliated with Major League Soccer.

Kaka Eyes Ballon d'Or

Milan play-maker Kaka wants to start the season strongly, something he admits will affect his chances of winning the Golden Ball.

Milan plamaker Kaka, having committed his future to the club, is now eyeing plenty of silverware, as much for the club as himself.

Apart from the regular club trophies, he insists that the Club World Cup in December would be special.

"I want the Champions League, Scudetto and Coppa Italia obviously, but I also have a special desire to win the Club World Cup," he told Studio Sport.

"On the possibility of winning the Golden Ball, he said: "We will have to wait and see because it all depends on my performances for the Diavoli this term."

He also spoke about compatriot Pato, who has signed for Milan and will start training soon, even though he can only feature in official games from January 3 onwards.

"I hope that he has the Italian mentality and can become one of the best Brazilians in Europe," said Kaka.

"I don’t know him all that well, but he is a young lad with incredible talent and when he arrives we will see how we can help him."

However, he was quick to shift the focus on the immediate future: "The key right now is getting our injured strikers back as Pippo Inzaghi, Ronaldo and Alberto Gilardino are three vital players."

Their absence was sorely felt in Moscow!

Lulinha Next Big Thing From Brazil?

Inter are now also following a very young Brazilian.

Having the same name as the President of Brazil has earned him the nickname "President of goals", but his fame comes exclusively from his skill and his goals. Marcelo Moraes dos Reis Lula is known in the football world simply as Lulinha, a name that bears resemblance to that of Brazilian president Luis Inacio Lula de Silva.

The difference with Brazil's first citizen is that the young man born on 10 April 1990 is able to do marvellous things with the ball at his feet and, despite being still a minor, he has been attracting attention from all corners of the footballing world, who will observe him closely during the next Under 17 World Cup to be played in Korea from 18 August to 9 September.

Among those people will be an observer from Inter, who has been requested to make a full and detailed report on the player on account of his performances in Korea. Certainly he will not suffer the pressure of being under close scrutiny. He's used to it, as his father Vanderlei has been bringing him to try outs for various clubs since he was 8, when he already had some amazing tricks up his sleeve.

Whoever wants to buy him will be able to sign him only after 10 April 2008, when he will celebrate his 18th birthday. Corinthians don't want to lose him but, with his contract expiring in 2009, if it is not extended they will have to start considering offers which are bound to come in for the player.

The lad who grew up at Santa Maria playing futsal, the Brazilian name for 5-a-side football, has also attracted the interest of Barcelona, who are always on the lookout for "baby" phenomenons. His idols are Zidane and Ronaldinho, even though he describes himself, rather unmodestly, as a mixture between Kaká and Ronaldinho ("I have the speed of the first and the ability of the second").

Since a few months he also has one of the most sought after agents in Brazil, Wagner Ribeiro, who also enabled the transfer of Robinho to Real Madrid. Ribeiro says Lulinha can be bought with an investment of 4 million euros, but the reality is that probably at least 10 million will have to paid for him.

Lulinha's translation to Italian is Luigino. Figo's first name is Luis, Luigi in Italian. Is it only a coincidence or is a possible substitute for the Portuguese already being lined up?

Ambitious Torino move for Kerlon

Ambitious Torino president Urbano Cairo is considering a move for Cruzeiro star Kerlon.

The Brazilian attacking midfielder came to the world's attention with his famous Foquinha move, but has faded from the limelight in the last 12 months.

Torino football chiefs are convinced they can help Kerlon recapture his best form and with a non-EU spot still to be filled, Cairo is seriously considering making an offer for the midfielder.

Brazil set for Algeria friendly

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) have confirmed Brazil will play a friendly against Algeria later this month.

Dunga's side will play the Africans on August 22 in Montpellier, according to a statement on the CBF official website.

It will be Brazil's 12th friendly under Dunga's guidance, having already claimed seven wins and recorded three draws and one defeat.

Last month in Venezuela, Dunga's team defeated their arch rivals 3-0 to retain the title they won in 2004.

Chelsea to double Daniel Alves wages

Chelsea are ready to launch a mega offer for Sevilla wing-back Daniel Alves.

With Real Madrid in talks over the double signing of Michael Ballack and Arjen Robben, Chelsea will use the cash raised to bid for Brazilian Dani Alves.

The 24-year-old said: "You have to make the most of your opportunities - a footballer's career is very short. I would like that if an offer came in for me."

Chelsea are believed to be prepared to more than double Alves £35,000-a-week Sevilla wages.

Kaka To Be At Milan For Life

In the face of continued Real Madrid advances, AC Milan playmaker Kaka has spoken of his desire to day at the Rossineri “for life”.

In a new twist to arguably the summers biggest transfer speculation, the player in the middle of a Spanish-Italian tug-of-war has indicated he would be willing to sign a new contract that will make him a Rossonero for life, “Will I stay a Rossonero for life? It depends on President Silvio Berlusconi and if he says he wants to keep me forever, then I believe him,” Kaka told Sky Italia television. “Besides, we’ve already had a meeting about this.”

As Madrid continue to stoke the transfer flames by claiming Kaka wants to join them and will be wearing the famed white jersey this year or the next, Milan have quietly countered by drawing up a new contract for their star-player. Ironically it was a Spanish newspaper, ‘Mundo Deportivo’, who revealed that Milan is preparing to table a new contract for Kaka that will see the Brazilian earn £4m a season until 2012.

Kaka further revealed how surprisingly relaxed the Milan players and staff are, as the transfer speculation over his possible transfer continues. As Madrid and Milan arrived at Moscow for the Russian Railways Cup, Kaka and the rest of the Milan squad accidentally boarded the Madrid coach, prompting Milan Coach Carlo Ancelotti to joke that Kaka must be very eager for a move to Madrid! The Spanish press have predictably made more of this episode than it warranted, something to which Kaka seemed bemused about, “It wasn’t just me, the entire team got on that bus,” pointed out the player. “Carlo Ancelotti made a joke about me being so eager to be part of the Real group. At this stage, the whole Real Madrid issue has become one big joke.” Amarpreet Dhadwal
